How Long Does LMS Development Take? What Drives the Timeline

Disclosure: Kaz Software publishes this guide and builds the DTCLMS learning platform. We have tried to keep the advice useful whichever vendor you choose.

There is no single answer, because the timeline follows the scope. Still, you can learn what is realistic by knowing the phases, what moves them, and how to read the figures vendors publish.

What vendors publish

Public timelines are rare. One Dhaka company, Brain Station 23, states roughly 8 to 12 weeks for a basic LMS and 3 to 6 months for an enterprise one on its LMS page, which we read on 12 October 2026. That is the company's own statement. Ask what 'basic' and 'enterprise' mean in practice before you compare it with another bid. Our Top LMS Development Companies in Bangladesh (2026 Guide) has the other vendors' public details.

The phases of an LMS project

Phase

What happens

Discovery

Users, roles, content, standards and integrations are written down

Design

Screens, flows and reports are agreed

Build or configure

The platform is built or set up around the design

Content migration

Courses, learners and records are loaded. See the migration guide

Testing

Acceptance tests with real files and real users

Pilot

One group uses it before everyone does

Rollout and training

Admins and instructors are trained, then learners are invited

Support

Fixes and small changes after launch

What stretches a timeline

  • Roles and approvals: the more user types and approval steps, the more to build and test.

  • Integrations: HR import, single sign-on and payments each add work.

  • Content: the volume and format of your courses. SCORM packages can be loaded as they are; content that needs converting takes longer.

  • Languages: Bangla and English together mean more testing. See Bangla and English LMS: What Universities and Trainers Need.

  • Data migration: history from an old system must be exported and checked. See Switching LMS Platforms: How to Migrate Courses and Learner Records.

  • Your review time: slow feedback moves every date.

  • Security and hosting reviews on your side.

Start from a platform or build from scratch

If the core modules already exist, there is less to build, which usually shortens the build phase. Kaz Software offers both routes, starting from DTCLMS or a fully custom build; see custom LMS development in Bangladesh. Content preparation, testing and training still take the time they take, whichever route you choose.

How to get a timeline you can trust

  • Ask every vendor for a milestone plan written against the same scope.

  • Ask what the plan assumes about your review time.

  • Ask what happens to the date when scope changes.

  • Launch in groups, starting with a pilot, rather than all at once.

  • Ask who is responsible for content preparation.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a basic LMS take to build?

One vendor publishes 8 to 12 weeks for a basic LMS and 3 to 6 months for an enterprise one. Your own scope decides where you fall.

Can we launch in phases?

Yes, and it is often safer. Start with one group and one set of courses, then add more.

Does content take longer than the software?

It can. Preparing or converting courses is separate work and may not be in the vendor's estimate, so ask.
