LMS Demo Checklist: 10 Tests to Run With Your Own SCORM Course
Disclosure: Kaz Software publishes this guide and builds the DTCLMS learning platform. We have tried to keep the advice useful whichever vendor you choose.
A feature list tells you what a vendor says. A demo with your own material shows what the product does. Run the same ten tests with every vendor, using the same files, and write down the results.
Bring this to the demo
One or two real SCORM packages, SCORM 1.2 and SCORM 2004 if you have both. See SCORM vs xAPI: What's the Difference and Which Does Your LMS Need?.
A short Bangla quiz that includes conjunct characters (যুক্তাক্ষর).
A sample learner list as a CSV file, with made-up names.
One real assignment rule, such as a course for one department with a due date.
The wording you want on a certificate.
The ten tests
Test | What to do | A good result |
1. Upload your course | Import your SCORM package live | It plays without errors, and completion and score are recorded |
2. Resume | Close the course halfway and reopen it | The learner returns to the same place |
3. Grading | Ask where quizzes are graded | On the server, so a learner cannot change a score |
4. Bangla text | Create the Bangla question and issue a certificate | Text renders correctly in the quiz and on the certificate |
5. Bulk enrolment | Import your sample CSV | Users are created and any errors are explained |
6. Assignment rule | Assign a course by department with a due date | Reminders and manager escalation can be configured |
7. Overdue view | Ask to see overdue training by department | One view that can be exported |
8. Certificate check | Open the verification link in a private window | It verifies without logging in |
9. Export | Export a report to CSV and open it in Excel | Bangla text is intact |
10. Phone and slow data | Open a lesson on a mid-range phone on a weak connection | It loads, is usable and resumes |
Questions to ask while you are there
Who owns the source code and the learner data?
What is not included in the estimate?
How are backups handled, and when was a restore last tested?
Where is the data hosted?
Who would build and support our project?
Record the results
Mark each test pass, partial or fail, then copy the results into the LMS Vendor Scorecard: How to Compare Bids Side by Side. A vendor who will not run a test on your files is telling you something; ask why.
Frequently asked questions
What if we do not have SCORM content yet?
Ask the vendor to play a sample package from an authoring tool and to say which authoring tools it has tested.
Should every vendor get the same files?
Yes. Identical files and identical tests are what make the results comparable.
Can we run these tests on DTCLMS?
Yes. Ask for a demo with your own content through the custom LMS development page.
